Ztwlab, designed by Zac Wong and Tim Wong of ZTW Lab Design Team, is a unique beauty centre that offers visitors a one-of-a-kind experience. Inspired by the architectural aesthetics of La Muralla Roja, a famous Spanish building known for its romantic pink color and maze-like design, Ztwlab creates a fantastical and timeless wonderland with a spatial experience.
What sets Ztwlab apart is its seamless connection of different indoor spaces, generating a sense of endlessness. The curves and round shapes, along with the cherry blossom pink color, not only create the illusion of space but also outline the curves of the female form, catering to the potential visitors of the beauty centre.
The main lobby of Ztwlab features a static hourglass design, with the background wall, ceiling, floor, and reception desk forming a cohesive unit. This design choice aims to create a timeless space that transcends trends. The round ceiling is covered with a water ripple metal sheet, while the floor directly underneath is adorned with pink marble tiles in a circular shape. When visitors look up, they are greeted with a reflection of themselves in a pink fantasy wonderland.
With a design area of 112 square meters, Ztwlab offers a range of facilities, including a reception counter for two people, two waiting areas that can accommodate up to 15 people, a display area, a cosmetic area for two people, eight facial rooms, a doctor consultation room with an operation area, and a pantry for staff members. The open-plan reception and waiting area promote better interaction between visitors and staff, while the circular traffic flow around the facial rooms ensures easy navigation for visitors.
Creating Ztwlab was not without its challenges. The design team had to work around four 900mm-diameter columns on-site, including one located in the waiting area. By wrapping the column with wood panels and building symmetric curved-shaped walls around it, the column became an integral part of the design rather than an obstacle. Additionally, fulfilling the client's requirement of having 15 different zones and rooms within the limited 112 square-meter space posed a challenge. However, the final floor plan optimized the functionality of the space, ensuring a clean traffic flow and efficient workflow for staff members.
Ztwlab was completed between May 2021 and August 2021 in Hong Kong. The design team conducted extensive research to break away from the typical clinic-like design of beauty centers and create a unique experience for visitors. By drawing inspiration from La Muralla Roja and incorporating its pink color and maze visual effects, Ztwlab offers a truly immersive and enchanting environment.
This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Ztwlab's innovative approach contributes to the improvement of quality of life, making the world a better place.
